Sync 100: e-bulletin February 2010 easy read |
---|---|
Watch out!
![]() We are sending this bulletin early because there are some important dates coming up!
Why not push yourself in 2010 and try something new? If you want to lead more, you need to try new things. Agreeing to disagree
![]() When we lead, we sometimes have to speak up. You might think something different and you need to say so. There are lots of ways to speak up. Our new article on the website this month is all about speaking up and how to disagree with people. When we started Sync we were surprised how much people disagreed with each other, and sometimes how nasty we all can be with people who don't think the same way as us. There are lots of things disabled people have different views on, and that's fine. Just because we are all disabled, it doesn't mean we all think the same. Sometimes we find it hard to deal with people who think differently to us. We get angry or are rude to them. As someone who leads, you need to make sure you treat people well, even when they don't agree with you. Our article on the website looks at lots of different ways to do this. Why not have a look and see for yourself? Go straight to the easy read article on Agreeing to disagree Dancer Rita Marcalo
![]() Our case study this month is Rita Marcalo, She is a dancer who was talked about in lots of newspapers recently. Rita has epilepsy and wanted to make a dance where she let other people watch her have a seizure. It was called ‘Involuntary Dances’. When Rita said she wanted to do this, lots of people said it was good and lots of people said it was bad. We wanted to know how Rita felt about the comments she got. Before she made the dance, she said she didn't really see herself as a disabled person. She does now. We have two short videos of an interview with Rita up on the site, and we also have a word document which has the interview typed up too. Why not have a look and listen to what Rita says? What? So what? Now what?
![]() So, lots there to think about. I was on a course last week, and at the end we were asked these questions: What? – what did we learn? So what? – what bits of the course were useful to us? Now what? - and what were we going to do about it? So I’m asking you the same questions.
Next month the bulletin will be about leading as an artist. We will also be able to tell you who is going to take up the placements and who is on the Intensives programme. Until then, have fun and keep warm – ideally at the same time! Jo Verrent Sync Project Manager |
