Sync: e-bulletin Dec 2011 easy read |
---|---|
It's the season to be jolly...![]() This is our last bulletin for this year - 2011. Hope it reaches you before your holidays start. Different people deal with winter and christmas in different ways – some love it, some hate it. Lots if us find it hard to do everything that we have to do - cooking, shopping, parties. How can we still make time to make art too? We have two different websites to share with you. They are both aimed at keeping people creative - making and doing things. The first mainly about writing. Three good ideas from it are:
![]() The second is a website which wants us all to ‘be an everyday creative, be creative every day. The site doesn’t say you have to do something creative everyday - it just gives you the idea. You can put up your pictures and ideas on this site too - and see the ones shared by others. All good ideas start with someone saying 'what if?'
All those on our current Sync Intensives Programme are very creative people. This month we are looking at Alison Short who works at Mind the Gap in Bradford. Alison is Chair of the Ideas Forum also called the 'IF' group – a job that she says is one of the highlights of her working life. The case study on Alison looks at how chairing the IF group has given Alison time to look at what matters to her in her own life and in the lives of other young people with learning disabilities. It also looks at how her own disability means she does her role and also at how she copes with success and disappointment. Alison views the world from a unique and positive perspective. Recently, a short film by Mind the Gap called Thug Dance was nominated for an award at the Oska Bright Film Festival in Brighton. Alison told us why she think it was picked out from so many It told a different story, something unexpected - a twist or double take. We are all too quick to see things one way. You can't always judge a book by its cover. The power of darkness![]() Another person on Sync Intensives at the moment is Lynn Cox, a coach, artist and trainer. In her article, Lynn looks at what people are like with darkness. Lynn is blind and so darkness feels very different to her than it might be to someone else Lynn thinks being visually impaired has been a good thing for her because it has meant she has learnt new things: I’ve learn to recognise the size of a room by the echo, learnt not to worry if I’ve just missed the bus which I couldn’t see waiting at the stop, I can still mentally picture any scene and not worry if I have some details wrong, and I can definitely smell out any ... food from 3 metres away. Lynn uses this confidence in her work. She is working with a group called Dialogue in the Dark. They are a German Social Enterprise company, who make exhibitions and run workshops that take place - like the name suggests - in the dark. We wanted to find out more about Lynn so asked her some questions. You can see her answers in the case study on her. Since being a small child, I had so many people telling me I couldn’t do things because of my poor sight that I suppose I rebelled and tried to do them anyway - it’s amazing how many things you can do when you try, and you always learn something from your failures too. (Lynn Cox) InSync![]() One more thing before we go - some news from us at Sync. From January 2012, we are opening Sync up to anyone who is interested in leadership and diversity - disabled people and non-disabled people. Of course disabled people will be the people who come on our courses and programmes, but from January, anyone will be able to sign up to get our e-bulletins. We know that our journeys, learnings and experiences have as much to say to non-disabled people as they do to disabled people - and we thought this would be a great way to start spreading that news - to help people get InSync with us. Also from January, we are offering a 21 day introduction to Sync. If you sign up for this, you’ll be sent one mini-email a day, telling you more about a part of Sync – it’s a great way of finding out more about us - or even reminding you about some of the great material we have. So from January, anyone can join up – for both the monthly bulletins and our introduction course – and if you can't wait, email us at [email protected] and we can put you straight onto the lists! That’s it for this month. All the best, Jo Verrent and Sarah Pickthall Sync It's the season to be jolly... [copy]![]() This is our last bulletin for this year - 2011.
