Mark Wright, our leadership expert says he is often asked the question about the difference between leading and managing.
He says:
‘A lot of people think that leadership is good and managing is bad.
Leaders having passion, and strong clear will to change things for the better - hooray!
Managers are bossy and control things - boo!’
But its not that simple!
If you see it this way, it is like worshipping the sun and shaking your fist at the rain when both are good and both make your garden grown So in order to get ahead, you need to be able to do both - managing and leading.
And then there is following. This is an important thing too because without the soil sitting around your plant feeding it and holding it up in the ground, then it won’t grow.
The most effective people in any organisation are those who are happy and able to do all three things.
So whilst we do tend to really like being out in the sun, we need to also need to enjoy the good things about cool, gentle rain and make sure there is a rich soil and lots of it so our ideas and plans or ‘plants’ can grow.
